Massage Techniques
A single Bodywork session may include two or more of the following.
During a Swedish massage, your therapist will first apply massage oil or lotion to your body and then employ long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. These purposeful movements help to warm your muscle tissue, release tension, and release those tight “knots” you may have been experiencing in your neck, shoulders, or back. In addition, Swedish massage may also incorporate the use of other techniques: circular pressure that is applied by his/her hands and palms, a firm kneading of the muscles, a percussion-like tapping, and even stretching of the joints and muscles.
The term shiatsu means “finger pressure,” which perfectly describes this technique. During a shiatsu massage, your therapist applies force to pressure points on your body using his or her thumbs, elbows, knees, or feet. Additionally, shiatsu focuses on rotating and stretching the limbs and joints.
Because a Shiatsu massage is focused on pressure points, it is possible to be fully clothed when receiving one. In fact, if you’re receiving a chair massage, it’s very likely that your massage therapist is using a Shiatsu massage technique.
Acupressure applies the same principles as acupuncture to promote relaxation and wellness and to treat disease. In traditional Chinese medicine 12 major meridians connect specific organs or networks of organs, organizing a system of communication throughout your body. The meridians begin at your fingertips, connect to your brain, and then connect to an organ associated with a certain meridian. Acupressure practitioners use their fingers, palms, elbows or feet, or special devices to apply pressure to acupoints on the body's meridians.
Myofascial release massage focuses on breaking up the hardened fascia to restore a healthy level of flexibility and range of motion. The massage therapist uses their hands to stretch and break down the fascia to regain precious flexibility. The process takes time, and a specific area can be focused on for over five or more minutes. Several sessions are usually required to achieve lasting improvements.
Reflexology involves placing pressure on specific areas of the foot, in combination with massaging and stretching to improve health and well-being. It is the ideal therapy for those who are body-conscious as only the feet are exposed.
A stretching session promotes increased flexibility, mobility and overall physical performance. Your therapist will assist with techniques focusing on specific muscle groups depending on your needs. Many clients find immediate relief and an increased range of motion following a session.
